Levin Releases Letters Showing Unanimous Support Among Joint Chiefs for Bergdahl Repatriation

Press Release

Date: July 10, 2014
Location: Washington, DC

Sen. Carl Levin, D-Mich., chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee, today released letters he received from each of the Joint Chiefs of Staff supporting the repatriation of Army Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl.

The letters were in response to a request from Levin for the opinions of all seven members of the nation's senior military leadership on the exchange of five U.S.-held detainees to secure the release of Bergdahl, who had been a prisoner of the Taliban since 2009.

"Each of these military leaders emphasized a simple principle -- America does not leave its troops behind," Levin said. "The unanimous support of the Joint Chiefs for securing Sergeant Bergdahl's release is a powerful statement on the importance of that commitment. I give great weight to their views, and I believe it's important for the American people to hear them."
